Several species of animals including Galapagos tortoises and red kangaroos live in pools and meadows around its base. Within the tree is a 430-seat 3-D film/special effects theater featuring "It's Tough to be a Bug!" - a humorous and exciting adventure within the miniature world of insects. Bridges lead across Discovery River to other lands and attractions. Some guests don't take the time to explore Discovery Island - but it's well worth it. Take the time to view the carvings on the tree of life, and don't miss the 3D theatre. Attractions/Rides To view more information concerning any of the attractions at Discovery Island, just click on one of the following links: Tree of Life Towering 14 stories high, the Tree of Life is visible from throughout the park. Inside the "Tree's" base is Disney's most recent venture into the world of 3D, "It's Tough to be a Bug". Safari Island Trail allows visitors the opportunity to roam the promenades, admire the foliage and gaze upon more exotic birds and wildlife. Look for Cotton-top tamarins, Saddle-billed storks, Galapagos tortoises, Asian small clawed otters, South American capybaras (the largest rodents in the world) and green-winged macaws here. The Trail area is wheelchair accessible. You may encounter the Storyteller/Changeling here, the duo that entertains and regales visitors with tales about the inhabitants of Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park. As expected the changeling "becomes" the animal as the storyteller tells the tale. Here is a list of the animal carvings to spot when walking around the Tree of Life : Camp Minnie and Mickey This is the place to meet with your favorite Disney characters at the meet-and-greet pavilions, or after the live stage shows of the "Festival of the Lion King", or "Pocahontas and Her Forest Friends" while at Animal Kingdom. Character Greeting Meet Mickey Mouse and his pals who are ready to greet you every day in their own special vacation spots around Camp Minnie & Mickey. Asia Asia is the newest area of Animal Kingdom (although more rides are being built in DinoLand USA). There's a walk-through exhibit here, a few restaurants to eat at, a great show to see, and a "thrill ride". Kali River Rapids is a fabulous example of how to combine thrill rides with education. Disney takes a standard raft ride and has added lots of themes and information to the ride to make it a thrilling and visually interesting experience. The Maharajah Jungle Trek is an exceptional exhibit to visit. Disney has several 'gamekeepers' along the trek to explain the various animals, and to answer your questions which really helps you all get more from the experience. The main attraction on Maharaja Jungle Trek is the large tiger habitat. There are several viewing areas for the public and several different environments for the tigers to roam within. Watch colorful and exotic birds perform tricks and stunts, as the Disney 'gamekeepers' explain all about their habitats and conservation of the species at the exciting Flights of Wonder show. Africa Africa is where the most exciting animal experiences occur. The first place to go is to the Kilimanjaro Safaris. This trip through Disney's 100 acre savanna is incredible. Take a postcard picture of the male lion standing on the edge of the main rock looking at the tour - does he look hungry? (the lion stays on the rock through the heat of the day because there's a cooling fan underneath it that he likes). Your entrance into Africa is through the friendly, welcoming Island of Harambe. Harambe is Swahili for "come together". Interestingly enough, this Island is a combination of a number of some of the favorite places in Africa found by Disney Imagineers whilst on a scouting trip during the planning stages of the park. Africa is over 100 acres in size. To get your bearings we strongly recommend that you start your day at the Conservation Station - and take the Trail Wildlife Express Train to view the Africa park and animals. Attractions/Rides To view more information on any of the rides at Animal Kingdom - Africa. Tips for Guests We recommend that all guests use the FASTPASS machines to plan their times on the best rides at Animal Kingdom. If you want to avoid the majority of the crowds, without using the FASTPASS machines, then get to the park early, work out which rides you want to see most, and then plan a time to see them when most guests are having their lunch at the park (between 12 noon and 2:00pm). Another tip worth trying is to travel around the park ant-clockwise - you'll see what we mean when you get there, and most guests travel in a clockwise direction! Take a sturdy/comfortable pair of shoes when you go to Animal Kingdom. It's massive - and by the end of the day you'll have walked for miles. Check out the tip board first thing. There's one near to the entrance (ask where it is). Here you can plan you day be finding the waiting times for popular attractions/rides, the times for that day's parades and shows, and which (if any) rides are closed. Also, make sure that you carry bottled water with you as you walk around. Some of the rides and attractions have long lines and if the Kilimanjaro Safari is particularly busy, Disney route the line through a hollow that builds the most stifling heat. Disney's Animal Kingdom is fairly well laid out as far as access goes, especially for those guests that need to use Wheelchairs. Generally the aisles and pathways are plenty wide enough to accommodate any of the electric mobility vehicles that can be rented within the park, although many of the paths are uneven with small hills and dips, which could make pushing a wheelchair bound guest very tiring for a family member. Directions Disney's Animal Kingdom is located at the end of the Osceola Parkway on the western end of Disney property, between Blizzard Beach and the Disney All Star resorts. Guests can take the regular Magic Kingdom entrance (exit 25B off Interstate 4), or the Disney exit off Hwy 192 and follow the signs for Blizzard Beach. Parking All-day parking for up to 6,000 vehicles at Disney's Animal Kingdom costs $6 for day visitors. Transportation from the parking lot to the theme park entrance is provided as with the other Disney theme parks in the form of free trams, which run every few minutes. Contact Details Disney's Animal Kingdom 1000 Osceola Parkway Kissimmee, FL Tel: 1 (800) W-DISNEY (934-7639) Web:www.disneyworld.disney.go.com Disney's Magic Kingdom The Magic Kingdom is the original (and some say best) Disney park in Florida. It first opened in 1971, and is divided into 6 'Worlds', arranged around the 'hub' of Cinderella's Castle. For most of our guests it's the most memorable of the parks, so we recommend that you plan to spend a couple of days here if you really want to get to see all of it. As you enter the Magic Kingdom, you come into Main Street USA, an replica 1900 street and square lined with shops and City Hall and leading to the dreaming spires of the beautiful Cinderella's Castle at the end of the street. Once you reach the end of Main Street USA (some guests even take a couple of hours to get down it!), you're faced with the first of many choices. Do you walk onward to explore Cinderella's Castle? Or do you head straight for on of the 6 'Worlds' in Magic Kingdom to really start your fun? Make sure that, during your visit, you schedule a time to be on Main Street USA for one of the parades. They're a magical way to start the day or to end it with one of the light parades. You can also get a schedule (from Town Square) to find out where to meet and greet the Disney characters like Mickey, Minnie, Goofy and many more. Whatever you decide - the fun starts here! To view each of the attractions and rides you can enjoy at Disney's Magic Kingdom, simply place your mouse over the menu panel on the left and then click on the rides, features and attractions that you're interested in - a new window will 'pop-up' with more details. Opening Times Disney's Magic Kingdom is open daily 9:00am through 6:00 to 11:00pm - dependant on shows and events and season. Peaks times later. Tips for Guests The original (and biggest) of the Disney parks - so be sure to wear comfortable shoes and take some sun-block with you. We recommend that you also use the lockers (located near the entrance/exit) which will make it easier for you to enjoy the park. We recommend that all guests use the FASTPASS machines to plan their times on the 2 or 3 rides at Disney MGM. If you want to avoid the majority of the crowds, without using the FASTPASS machines, then get to the park early, work out which rides you want to see most, and then plan a time to see them when most guests are having their lunch at the park (between 12 noon and 2:00pm). Arrive as early as you can, as many rides have BIG lines during busy times. The one's that get really busy are Tower of Terror, Muppet 3D, The Great Movie Ride and Rock 'n' Roller Coaster. We also recommend that you plan 2 days at Magic Kingdom to be sure to get the most from the park. Plan it like a campaign - be sure to get the park map with all of the attractions, then use our table on the left to figure which rides and attractions are 'must see' features for your family - then plan each day accordingly, spreading the BIG rides and attractions over the 2 days. Check out the tip board first thing. There's one near to the entrance (ask where it is). Here you can plan you day be finding the waiting times for popular attractions/rides, the times for that day's parades and shows, and which (if any) rides are closed. Most attractions, restaurants, shops and shows are fully accessible to guests using wheelchairs and walking assistance devices. Additional services are available for guests with visual or hearing disabilities. For a detailed overview of the services offered, including transportation, parking, attraction access, and more, collect a copy of the Guidebook for Guests with Disabilities at Guest Relations. The 1,671-seat showroom is the first freestanding permanent theatre ever built for Cirque du Soleil. The dynamic white structure was designed to convey elegance and sensuality with the addition of fabric and tension reminiscent of a Big Top. The contrasting black showroom interior transports the audience to another world as soon as they enter the theatre. The set on the Elizabethan-style stage is similar to a well-traveled path. Gaze upward and look at the seven Fabulous Figures that decorate the ceiling. The musicians perform on two platforms housed in the 75-foot towers rising on both sides of the stage. This Cirque du Soleil creation is an unforgettable journey through this universe - at once threatening and exhilarating, frightening and familiar. La Nouba is the story of all stories, the site of all mysteries, where dreams and nightmares sleep side by side. La Nouba is memory, individual and universal. It beckons to us, challenges us to uncover passions we thought we had lost long ago. Here, anything is possible. With an international cast of more than 70 artists, the Cirque du Soleil theatre, located in the heart of Downtown Disney West Side at Walt Disney World Resort, welcomes more than 1,650 spectators twice daily, five days a week. Located next to the VillaDirect offices by mile marker 8 it's easy to find and enjoy. Guests are invited to celebrate the wedding of a Prince and Princess. The arena-like dining area resembles bleacher-style seating where guests are served while the show unfolds. Voted #1 dinner show in Central Florida, Arabian Nights is a unique night out for both young and old alike. The show combines theatrical elements that generate lots of excitement and wonder from the audience members. Simply a stunning night out for the whole family to enjoy. The Royal feast combines roasted prime rib of beef, potatoes, vegetables and specialty deserts. Children menus are available and would includes a hearty portion of crispy chicken fingers, magical mashed potatoes and fresh seasonal vegetables. Reservations are recommended Horses in the show include: Andalusian: The modern Andalusian is the descendant of the Spanish horse which, along with the Arabian and the Barb, has exerted the greatest influence on the world horse population. Quarter Horse: The Quarter Horse, the first all-American breed, is claimed to be "the most popular horse in the world." Percheron: The attractive Percheron, an elegant horse owing much to Arabian blood, is one of the most popular heavy breeds. Arabian: The Arabian Horse is considered the fountainhead of all the world's breeds and is acknowledged as the principal foundation of the Thoroughbred. Appaloosa: The Appaloosa's heritage is as colorful and unique as its coat pattern. Black Stallion: "The Black" is a unique and rare jewel in the world of horses and is the centerpiece of a magical fairy tale. Saturn V Centre The Apollo/Saturn V centre features an actual 363-foot Saturn V moon rocket, dramatic "you are there" recreations and presentations in two theaters and a large exhibition area with interactive displays. This tour destination is truly a celebration of America’s great achievement of landing humans on the moon and returning them safely to Earth. Encounter Guests to Kennedy Space Centre Visitor Complex will now have the opportunity to come face-to-face with a real astronaut every day of the year. This innovative program consists of question and answer sessions, mission briefings, video footage, space artifacts and personal stories of space travel as told by those who have lived it. Various astronauts from throughout space history are scheduled to appear including Mercury, Gemini, Apollo and Shuttle astronauts. Memorial The names of the seventeen U.S. astronauts who gave their lives for space exploration are carved into the face of this polished black granite monument. The beautiful 60 ton structure tracks the movement of the sun through the sky, resulting in an effect that suspends the astronauts' names in the brilliantly reflected sky. Early Space Located in an adjoining wing to the Dr. Kurt H. Debus Conference Facility is Early Space Exploration. This walk-through exhibit provides visitors with a comprehensive history of key missions that provided the foundation for our current space program. Highlights include Mercury Mission Control Room-- containing the actual Mercury Mission Control consoles and components from which all of America's first eight manned missions were monitored and authentic Mercury and Gemini capsules. IMAX Theatre The only back-to-back twin IMAX® theaters in the world are located at the Kennedy Space Centre Visitor Complex, showcasing two exciting motion pictures on screens 5-1/2 stories tall! Stand and see the panoramic view of the launch pad as you've never seen it before. Millennium Exhibition Visitors are taken on a journey from the Vikings' discoveries of Greenland and Iceland to Mars Viking Lander, the first U.S. probe to land on another planet in 1976. Visitors have the opportunity to see and actually touch a piece of Mars, which fell to the Earth as a meteorite. Guests may also submit their names to fly in space on a future mission! Rocket Garden Rocket Garden, a three-acre centerpiece of the Visitor Complex, is undergoing a complete makeover, improving guest flows, further preserving the rocket artifacts and making the display more informative than before These massive rockets, launched at various times throughout the history of the early space program, are positioned upright in an outdoor exhibit for visitors to experience. Shuttle Plaza Imagine working aboard a real space shuttle and floating in space as you enter inside the space shuttle Explorer – a full-sized replica of a NASA shuttle orbiter. You’ll see the Flight Deck, where astronauts fly the orbiter during actual launch and landings, and the Mid-deck, where shuttle crews work on experiments, sleep and eat Space Shop The Space Shop is the world’s largest store devoted entirely to space memorabilia, gifts and collectibles. There are over 8,000 space-related items that will entice space enthusiasts of all ages – from the first-time visitor to the serious collector. Space Station This fascinating facility gives you an up-close glimpse inside the actual facility where NASA is preparing the real components of the International Space Station - the largest, most complex structure ever to be placed into orbit. Learn how the International Space Station is being constructed and the benefits it will contribute to humankind. Universe Theatre Does life exist on other planets? Quest for Life, a new 15-minute film, examines this possibility, blending the recent findings of the possible discovery of early life on Mars with theories from leading scientists. Quest for Life examines how the Earth embarked on its quest for life, resulting in our planet as we know it. The film also addresses the likelihood of other planets following their own quest, and NASA’s plans to determine if life truly does exist in other parts of the universe. Silver Springs Silver Springs is a hidden treasure in north central Florida that is usually missed by most tourists. It is located near Ocala, Florida just 75 miles (120 km) north of Orlando. Located at the headwaters of the Silver river, the springs gush nearly 550 million gallons (over 2,000 million liters) of crystal clear water every day creating the largest natural artesian spring formation in the world. The waters of Silver Springs and the nearby Silver River are so transparent that this has become a favorite location for the filming of underwater scenes in many movies and television shows. You can visit Silver Springs and view the underwater creatures in a glass-bottomed boat, take a jungle cruise, visit the wildlife park, petting zoo and alligator farm. You can stroll through the botanical gardens, watch an animal show and listen to a concert. Ripley's "Believe it or not" Orlando's "Odditorium" For over forty years the adventurous Robert Ripley explored the uncanny and amazing mysteries of the earth. His travels took him around the world in search of the unbelievable and inexplicable. First published in 1929, Robert Ripley's works were read worldwide in over 300 newspapers, translated into 17 languages and held a readership of over 80 million. Now many of the artifacts gathered by Ripley's from around the world can be viewed at this fun center in Orlando. Green Meadows Petting Farm Friendly farmhands keep things moving on the two-hour guided tour of Green Meadows Petting Farm - a 40-acre property with over 300 animals. There's little chance to get bored, and no waiting in line because tours are always starting. Everyone who wants to gets to milk the fat mama cow, and chickens and geese are turned loose in their yard to run and squawk while city slickers try to catch them. Kids take a quick pony ride, and everyone gets jostled about on the old-fashioned hayride. Kids come away saying: "I milked a cow, caught a chicken, pet a pig, and fed a goat." Kennedy Space Centre Where else in the world does history and the future, nature and technology, young and old meet for an unforgettable and inspirational journey through space and time? The Kennedy Space Centre has hosted millions of guests from around the world for more than 30 years - telling the story of how the United States built a space program that launched men to the moon. At the space center, you can also see how NASA has launched and orbited satellites that have improved our lives, and sent probes into distant space to solve the mysteries of the cosmos. Visitors can expect to dedicate at least one day exploring the complex, enjoying its Rocket Garden, IMAX movies, space history exhibits, a full-sized walk-through Space Shuttle display, bus tours, restaurants, gift shops, and the new Apollo/Saturn V facility. Other space-related attractions are available nearby, including Space Camp, and the Astronaut Hall of Fame. For full details of the next planned launch, visit the NASA launch schedules web site by clicking here. Gatorland Long before Walt Disney World, there was Gatorland. Through the monstrous aqua, gator-jaw doorway (a definite photo-op) lie thrills and chills in the form of thousands of alligators and crocodiles, swimming and basking in the Florida sun. In addition to the gators and crocs, there is a zoo that houses many other reptiles, mammals, and birds. A free train ride provides an overview of the park, and a three-story observation tower overlooks the breeding marsh, which is swamped with gator grunts, especially come sundown during mating season. Don't miss the Gator "Jumparoo" Show, in which gators leap out of the water for their food. The best is the first one in the morning, when the gators are hungriest. There's also a Gator Wrestling Cracker-style Show, and though there's no doubt who's going to win the match, it's still fun to see the handlers take on those tough guys with the beady eyes. In the educational Snakes of Florida Show, high drama is provided by the 30-40 rattlesnakes that fill the pit around the speaker. Don't look for scrupulous Disney-style cleanliness here, and the personnel aren't polished with pixie dust either. This is a real Florida experience, and you'll walk out those aqua gator jaws knowing the difference between a gator and a croc. DisneyQuest Experience the first-ever indoor interactive Theme Park. It's a wildly imaginative wonderland featuring the highest of high-tech fun for kids and grown-ups. Shoot the rapids in a virtual prehistoric world. Hop into a simulator and ride a roller-coaster that you design. Fly a magic carpet through an ancient city. Sail into the virtual world of the Pirates of the Caribbean. And record your own CD at Radio Disney Song Maker. Then, dine at The Cheesecake Factory Express. It's a breakthrough concept in family fun. Disney quest offers 5 levels and over 100,000 square feet of air conditioned indoor adventures, games and activities for guests of all ages. The attraction is divided into the four zones that are listed below. The Explore Zone is located on the first floor of Disney Quest. These adventures will take to mythical and faraway lands, such as the new Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle for Buccaneer Gold. The entire family can participate in this adventure as well as The Virtual Jungle Cruise Expedition. Most of the rides/adventures in this zone are relatively tame and can be enjoyed by all family members. Most of The Create Zone, which is located on the second floor, will be a favorite of the younger children. Here you can use your imagination as well as your creativity as you design your own song at the new Song Maker, or learn how to draw Pluto at The Animation Academy. The most popular attraction on this floor, and possibly for all of Disney Quest is Cyber Space Mountain. Here, guests are able to create their very own roller coaster, then experience their very own inversion-packed ride first-hand. This ride is not recommended for younger children or anyone that experiences motion sickness. On the third, forth and fifth floors, you will find The Replay Zone. This zone contains many of your standard arcade games such as Skee Ball, Air Hockey and Space Invaders, along with some classic games with a new twist. At Buzz Lightyear's AstroBlaster, they have taken your typical bumper cars and added cannons with which you can 'blast' other cars. Here you can also find the interactive jet skis, motorcycles and cars, with surprisingly, not too long of a wait. Located on the forth and fifth floors, The Score Zone, contains futuristic, virtual reality game playing. Guests can participate in the life sized Mighty Ducks Pinball Slam, or slay super villains as they Ride the Comix. Our favorite is Invasion! An Extra TERRORestrial Alien Encounter, where a group of four work together to rescue stranded colonists on an alien planet.
